Healing the World with Sound:

The 13th Annual World Sound Healing Day

The idea of using sound to “heal” the world at first seems quite strange. The idea of using sound to heal anything in fact, seems quite outlandish. That is, until you begin to explore the possibilities—the mysticism and the science behind this notion.

If you examine the basic tenets of the different spiritual traditions on this planet, they all share a commonality—an understanding that sound was the original creative force. Examples of this can be found in the New Testament: “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God” and the Old Testament: “And the Lord said: ‘Let there be Light’.” In the Hindu traditions, it is said: Nada Brahman—The World Is Sound. In various indigenous traditions, life, the universe and everything that is occurs through a creator being making a sound for manifestation.

Now our quantum physicists are echoing the words of the mystic masters of old, declaring that: “The universe is Music” or “Everything is vibration”. Sound, we are re-discovering, is an extraordinarily powerful force that can literally change molecular structure and affect us down to our DNA. Sound can also affect our consciousness, shifting and changing our brainwaves, bringing us into attunement with something greater than ourselves and often times, altering and enhancing our state of being.

The ability of our individual consciousness, when combined with others at the same time through activities such as group prayers or meditation are now being studied. The results seem to indicate that the effect of such group activities can actually influence the activities within local areas and potentially, our planet itself. Group meditations for peace, for example, when participated in my skilled practitioners of meditation, have been found to decrease violent and hostile activities in the vicinity of these meditations. War torn cities, for example, will for some seemingly unknown reason, will have limited times of peace following such meditations in these cities. These studies have been documented in the Journal of Conflict Resolution.

Now, the power of group prayers and meditations—particularly those that are occurring throughout the world are being studied by two different groups—the Global Consciousness Project, out of Princeton, NJ and the Global Coherence Initiative out of Boulder Creek, CA. The GCP has found a most interesting phenomenon. Utilizing random number generators spread throughout the world, they have found that when events of high compassion occur, the numbers generated by these devices become less random. They can in fact be charted and graphed. Thus, what should be a relatively straight line (due to randomness) becomes a mountainous peak during measurement of global prayers and meditation.

The GCI focuses on the relationship between the electro-magnetic field of the human and that of the geo-magnetic field (the ionsphere) of our planet. Is the electro-magnetic fields of human beings acting together in coherence (sympathetically vibrating together) during global meditations somehow interface, influence and effect the field of the planet? The results seems to indicate that this is indeed both possible and true.

The work of the GCP and GCI indicate that our consciousness, when resonating and synergizing together in harmony, can affect the consciousness of this planet. Thus, we as a species can collectively affect our world.

If you are new to this idea or a skeptic, you may be wondering about the idea of there being a planetary consciousness. How indeed can this be? It is a most ancient idea, that our ancestors have been aware of. Modern philosophers and mystics have espoused this concept as well, often referring the name “noosphere” or the “Gaia Consciousness” to indicate the field of consciousness generated by our planet. Gaia is the name that is usually used for our planet in this context—an ancient Greek name for the energy of the Earth. If this name seems alien to you, then use the term “Mother Earth”—they mean the same thing.

And indeed, those who observe and attune themselves to our planet seem to understand that the concept of “Mother Earth” is more than a fairy tale—it is an actual and valid field of consciousness that surrounds us.

Research on the effects of the human species through meditation and prayer to effect the consciousness of other humans as well as the Earth itself is fairly new. Even newer is the effects of sound—especially what could be called “intentionalized sound” to influence and potentially amplify these effects.

As noted, the concept of sound being an extraordinarily powerful energy is nothing new—known by the ancients and now being rediscovered by our scientists. A question that comes to mind is: why would sound be able to enhance the effects of meditation and prayers. The answer is quite simple: sound amplifies the power of prayer. This is the reason why a majority of the prayers on this planet are vocalized—whether they are chanted aloud, whispered or sung. Once again sound amplifies the power of prayer.

From another perspective, sound seems to help focus the energy of our consciousness and our prayers. On a personal level and with students, we’ve found that projections of positive, loving energy are more effective when they’re accompanied by sound such as a vowel or mantra like “Ah” or “Om”.

It’s as though the sound can be encoded with the energy of the person making the sound. This is, in fact, one of the concepts that I initially formulated back in the 1980’s: “Frequency + Intent = Healing”. A corollary to this is “Vocalization + Visualization = Manifestation”. It means that specific consciousness can be encoded upon the sound we make. This consciousness effects the person (or persons) receiving the sound. The power of Intention has become commonly accepted these days—books have been written about Intention and its power has now been demonstrated through research such as the work of Masuru Emoto’s water photographics.

Most studies of the efficacy of prayer, as well as creating coherence in the human electro-magnetic field shows two things. First, that the energy of love, compassion and appreciation are the most effective to have when working with prayer. And second, that prayer is most successful when it is done with the feeling of gratefulness and thanks—as though that which is being prayed for has already been accomplished. Most studies of the efficacy of prayer, as well as creating coherence in the human electro-magnetic field shows that prayer is most effective when done with a feeling of appreciation.

Thus, prayers made with the feeling of love and appreciation and then encoded upon a sound such as “Ah” are extraordinary effective. The “Ah” sound, incidentally, is not simply a randomly chosen vowel. It seems to be almost universally understood as a sound that embodies the power of love. It is in fact, a sound that we make when we are in love or when we love something. Regardless of the culture, tradition or part of the world, when someone sees something they like, they will often sound forth with an “Ah”. And that “Ah” can be perceived and understood by anyone—it is a universal sound.

The “Ah” is also a vowel sound that is associated with the heart and in particular, the heart chakra or energy center. In traditions throughout this planet that work with energy, the “Ah” is often found to be the sound said to resonate the heart chakra—the center of love. If you don’t believe this, just try it for yourself. Sound a gentle, relaxed “Ah” and see where you feel it. No doubt many of your will find it resonating in the center of your chest—the heart chakra.

When all these elements—the power of prayer to effect planetary consciousness and sounds ability to amplify this—are combined, it seems obvious that the use of intentionalized sound as a vehicle to create shift and change on a planetary level is quite possible. We can then focus on the actual manifestation of this, which brings us to World Sound Healing Day.

The idea of World Sound Healing Day first manifested nearly a dozen after a meditation in which I was told to put my attention on the continued use of sound for personal healing, but in addition, the use of sound for planetary healing. Thus, in the winter of 2002, I began organization an event—a day in which people throughout the planet would project a global tone for planetary peace. Working with several colleagues I suggested this idea to, we came up with the name World Sound Healing Day. February 14th was chosen as the day for this, facilitating the concept of sending a “sonic valentine” to the Gaia consciousness—Mother Earth—through sounding the “Ah”.

World Sound Healing Day has continued to grow since then, gaining the attention of several organizations which measure the effects of planetary prayers and meditations, including the Global Consciousness Project and the Global Coherence Initiative. The data received and charted for the 2009 World Sound Healing Day as quite interesting. Here, also is a link for more information: World Sound Healing Day Data. While we can’t necessarily draw specifics about the meaning of this data, it certainly shows great promise with regard to the potential of intentionalized sound such as we create on World Sound Healing Day as we help create positive shifts and changes on our planet.

Once you begin to understand the idea that projecting intentionalized sound together collectively on planet for events such as World Sound Healing Day is both very ancient and spiritual as well as being quite modern and cutting edge scientific, it’s easy to realize that such events may hold the key to our evolutionary continuation and development on this planet.

There are many prophecies, including those in our Bible, that talk about gatherings of people who sound together in order to restore balance on to our planet and that when people sound together with their voice as a singing prayer for world peace and harmony, it can have a significant effect in restoring peace on earth. The sonic meditation of World Sound Healing Day is so important for the healing of our planet. World Sound Healing Day energizes the peace and transformation that all people seek for our Earth. With our wisdom and intentional sound, we can help create a positive future – one that will benfit our children and our children’s children: The Way of Compassion, Love and Lasting Peace.

Please join us at noon (your local time) on February 14th, 2015 and sound forth for 5 minutes with the “AH”, created and projected with the energy of compassion and love, sending a sonic valentine to Gaia, our Mother Earth. At that time, please go to templeofsacredsound.org to enhance the vibratory effect as we sound together for planetary peace and harmony. If going Online is difficult or the time is inappropriate, we ask that we simply sound an “AH” anytime during that day to assist this frequency shifting of our planet. Additionally, in order to help amplify the energy of our intentionalized sound on World Sound Healing Day, there’s a free live “AH” Training Wave that can be downloaded from this website: www.worldsoundhealingday.org.

Many people hold Global Toning events throughout the world. If this idea resonates with you, please do so. For more information about this event, including ways of linking your event, go to: www.worldsoundhealingday.org As an example, here in Boulder, Colorado we facilitate a free event that starts at 5 PM and goes for an hour. It’s always amazing for everyone who attends. There’s nothing like being in a room full of people creating intentionalized sound—people come back year after year because the experience is so profound, powerful and joyful. For those creating events, we have a special “Global AH” recording that is available as a free download. Please visit us at www.worldsoundhealingday.org for more information on how to receive this.

Thank you. Remember—we heal the planet, we heal ourselves. We heal ourselves and we heal the planet! We can make a difference!
